Cathedral Curriculum Standards
Cathedral of the Risen Christ School is dedicated to creating curriculum that develops the whole child, including rigorous academics, spiritual development, physical education, and creative exploration. With a firm foundation in the formation of young Catholics, the school is fully approved by the Nebraska Department of Education and meets or exceeds all curriculum requirements. Teachers at Cathedral actively pursue professional development, as well as explore new research in proven academic methods.
In addition to the academic curriculum, Cathedral offers programs and specialty services in these areas within the regular school day schedule:
Religion: The religion curriculum utilizes the Faith and Life Textbook Series published by Ignatius Press and follows the guidelines of the Diocese of Lincoln Education Department and is supplemented by daily and monthly expressions of Faith. Each day students attend daily Mass, pray before and after meals as well as before or between some classes. Every month students have the opportunity to go to confession, attend First Friday Benediction and/or Stations of the Cross during Lent, and visit with the Cathedral priests in their classrooms. Throughout the school year there are other faith-filled elements such as the Little Saints presentations, Living Rosary, May Crowning, and more.
MTSS Coaching: The MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) Coach and classroom act as the home base for students with special needs. Students who are eligible for services from Lincoln Public Schools will be served Cathedral. The MTSS Coach acts as both the one-on-one and small-group instructor for students who need reading and/or math interventions, and serves as the primary liaison to LPS.
Dyslexia Program: Cathedral Catholic School offers dyslexia interventions for students in Grades K-8. Click here for more information on the Cathedral Dyslexia program.
Music: Outside of regular music classes, junior high students can also join the Junior High Choir, which provides opportunities such as a Christmas concert, spring concert, singing at school Masses, and community events such as the All City Pius X Music Festival.
Band: Both Band and Advanced Band include performance opportunities outside of the regular school day schedule. The students work in both small-group and class-size practice sessions with an instructor who works across several Catholic elementary schools as well as Pius X High School.
Art: The art program at Cathedral is taught by a full-time art teacher for grades K-8. Student artwork is displayed prominently throughout the Cathedral school and parish as well as showcased annually at the SOAR Cathedral auction and in drawing contests.
Technology: Cathedral facilities include a computer lab run by a full-time technology teacher. Students as young as kindergarten experience technology with classes that include website building, video editing, keyboarding, word processing, and coding. They are taught responsibility regarding technology, the internet, social media, and more. For more on Cathedral’s approach to using technology in the classroom, go to our A Glimpse Into Our Classrooms page.
Physical Education: The physical education program at Cathedral is taught by a full-time teacher and includes grade-appropriate lessons and activities, with a goal of introducing children to a love of physical activity that leads to a healthy life. Younger grades are taught the importance of fitness and nutrition as well as how to play in a cooperative and fun environment based on development of motor skills. Older students are put through thematic studies of games and sports as they relate to techniques and tactics, and sport’s impact on culture.
Junior Achievement: Cathedral is a Junior Achievement Superstar School, which recognizes schools that have a 100% commitment to having Junior Achievement participation in all grades. Through this program, students learn entrepreneurial skills in real-life situations with the help of teachers and community volunteers. In 2015 Cathedral was recognized by Junior Achievement as a Superstar School, and the junior high capstone project was given the Bronze Leadership Award.
