Maxwell, CRC Alum

I have been at Cathedral since Kindergarten. Even then my Faith was already being increased. I am very grateful that we get to go to mass every day. Not many schools, even Catholic ones get that opportunity. I also got to receive three different sacraments during my time at Cathedral, first Confession, first Communion, and Confirmation. Since I had an older brother at Cathedral, I watched as he received the sacraments and knew that I would soon be next. Also, some of our classes at Cathedral help us learn more about our Faith (Religion) and help us to participate more in the Mass (Sacred Music). All the boys at Cathedral are also invited to serve at Mass when they get old enough. I remember seeing my older brother serving and wanting to do it too, as well as the excitement when I got old enough to begin my training. At first, I messed up, but the older soldiers [of St. Sebastian] helped me out and told me what to do. Now I am a full soldier and I recently had the privilege of getting to serve my little sister's first Confession and first Communion, and my younger brother's Confirmation. Cathedral is a Catholic school, and the school part is a lot of what we do there. I remember that most every time I had a question or was confused, a teacher would always offer encouragement or help me out. Because of their help, my grades have prospered K-8th. I'd like to thank the teachers and all of the people who have helped me in any way at Cathedral. I have had a great time at Cathedral and will be bringing many memories that I have made here to High School.

I came to the Cathedral of the Risen Christ School in 6th grade.  I didn't know much about religion as I know now.  Mrs. Wisdom taught me what to do in church like genuflect when going into the pews, and put my finger over my mouth when going up to communion before my first communion. Father Fulten taught me every Wednesday after school for an hour about confession and communion. I did my first confession with him, and my first communion with Monsignor Tucker. Mrs. Wisdom was my favorite teacher because she helped me learn so much; she makes learning more fun, and she is super nice. I'm so thankful for learning everything that I have learned here and had the opportunity to get to go to church everyday. I will never forget my time here at Cathedral.

Mrs. Walsh, CRC Teacher

“Give it until Christmas,” I told myself. “Everybody feels like a fish out of water at a new job. Plan on not belonging until at least Christmas.” This was the self-talk I gave myself as I walked into my new position as one of the 5th grade teachers at Cathedral of the Risen Christ. The building was not unfamiliar. In college, I worked at Holy Family Child Care as one of the daycare/summer program teachers. I knew a few of my students when they were much younger. I had interacted with a number of the teachers before and had connections with the priests. Despite these connections, though, I was still nervous. I was a fourth year teacher in a new grade, at a new school that was double the size of my previous school. I was going to have a grade partner, going to have to prepare students for Confirmation, going to have to learn a new set of rules, expectations, and relationships.

The anxiety of August, however, had pretty much vanished by October when I found myself saying “I love this place” as I entered the building laden with my many teaching bags. I had been afraid of being an outsider, and yet I found myself deeply connected. I had 16 amazing students. I had coworkers who cared about me and listened to my questions with patience and support. I had a principal who encouraged me and modeled positive leadership. I felt like an important piece of a mission, not just to develop young minds, but young hearts and souls.

I am still a new teacher at Cathedral. My story does not include a long-term perspective or a vast amount of experience. However, I am blest to be a teacher at Cathedral. May God, who began this good work in our school, bring it to fulfillment.

Our youngest child will graduate from Cathedral of the Risen Christ School this year. After 16 years of driving down Sheridan Blvd to school, our route will change. There was really never any discussion of not sending our children to a Catholic School. We liked the idea of our children going to a smaller school and also being able to grow in their faith. The staff and administration at Cathedral have been wonderful. The staff is always putting the students first and they want nothing but to see the students flourish both in school and in the community. Our older children still have their favorite teachers from Cathedral and always make a point of saying hi and catching up when their paths cross. That says a lot on how big of an impact the teachers have made in their lives.

It is bittersweet to say goodbye to Cathedral School but it will be fun to watch the school continue to grow and change.
