Are you familiar with NJHS? Read on to learn more about what Mark Simmons, 8th grade teacher at Cathedral, has to say about our National Junior Honor Society chapter.

What does NJHS stand for and what is it’s purpose?
NJHS is the National Junior Honor Society. Many are familiar with National Honor Society in high schools. This is the partner organization which recognizes Junior High/Middle School students across the United States. Our Cathedral NJHS chapter recognizes students who excel in scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character.

Who can be in NJHS and is this all over Lincoln?
NJHS exists around the country, but only schools who have applied to the National Association of Secondary School Principals can have a chapter within their school. Currently Cathedral of the Risen Christ is the only school in Lincoln to sponsor an NJHS chapter.
Each Spring, Cathedral students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 are invited to apply for membership. The applications are reviewed by a faculty committee and selected members are inducted into the chapter.

What do NJHS members do?
Cathedral’s NJHS chapter meets twice monthly during the school year. These member-led meetings are where the members and faculty sponsor discuss ways the group can best serve our school. The group holds fundraisers and food drives, leads the morning and afternoon announcements and prayers, and volunteers to assist in any projects needed within the school. It is their goal to serve as role models for younger students.

How would you say that NJHS members live out stewardship?
The members have always been willing to help the school in whatever ways they can. Most members serve as peer helpers and volunteer in other classrooms during some study halls. They help younger students with reading, math, and practicing prayers. They give of their time to help teachers in the building and to set an example for all students.
